About the Peter Pinson Gallery

The Peter Pinson Gallery concentrates on artists who achieved national prominence during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. These artists are now recognized for their significant contribution to Australian art.

As well as solo exhibitions of artists’ recent work, the Gallery periodically conducts Survey or Retrospective exhibitions, which trace the evolution of significant artists’ careers.

The gallery also exhibits the work of leading contemporary aboriginal painters.

The Gallery Director, Peter Pinson, is an Emeritus Professor at the University of New South Wales. Initially trained as a painter (winning the New South Wales Traveling Art Scholarship in 1968), he has written very extensively on Australian art, including hard-bound monographs on artists including Elwyn Lynn, Rodney Milgate, Emanuel Raft, Bert Flugelman, and a study of the late work of John Passmore. He initiated the first exhibition surveying Sydney abstract expressionism (at the Ivan Dougherty Gallery in 1980), and curated the Elwyn Lynn retrospective exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He has received an award within the Order of Australia for his contribution to the Visual Arts in Australia.
